U.S. Military Presence in Okinawa

There are 132 U.S. military facilities in Japan under the guise of the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty. Though Okinawa is a tiny Island (0.6 % land area of Japan), it has 39 U.S. military facilities. Therefore, Okinawa shares 75% of all the land in Japan occupied by the U.S. forces.
The U.S. military bases on Okinawa along with those of the Japanese SDF(Self Defence Forces) occupy about one forth of the surface area of the main Okinawa Island. The U.S. bases alone cover 11 % of the land area in the whole Okinawa prefecture, and 20 % on its main Island.
Nealy half, 25 out of 53, of Okinawa's cities, towns and villages contains bases, such as 85 % of Kadena town, 60 % of Kin town, 59 % of Chatan town, 53 % of Ginoza village, 48 % of Yomitan village and 46 % of Higashi village are occupied by the U.S. bases.
As the "Base Island," Okinawa have 35,000 U.S. military personnel, comprising members of the Navy, Army, Air Force and the Marine Corps which is the largest with 20,000.

Since Japanese government behaves with the aime of obliging American strategic planners rather than taking account local needs and demands, the residents of Okinawa have a distrust of its policy deep in their heart. They also feel that Japanese government is sure to operate in an atmosphere of collusive secrecy in order to present faits accomplis where U.S. military encroachment is concerned.
